Show Played Live on September 24th, 2018

Artist: Secret Space

Song: “We Can Float Away”

Album: AntiHero

Hometown: Toledo, OH

Release Date: August 24, 2018

Record Label: Equal Vision Records

The fresh release from the Toledo band brings a new sound to listeners. Breaking away from the noise of their other album The Window Room, with their new heavy fuzz and full sound that can be heard on tracks such as “Loner” this is definitely something new for the band. Personally I really enjoy the new sound, it feels very full, powerful and in your face. I am very interested to see how Secret Space combines new sound with the old, I think it would create for a very dynamic set that we haven’t seen before.

Artist: Dubé

Song: “Who Do You Work For”

Album: (Single)

Hometown: Ottawa, Ontario

Release Date: 2018

Record Label: (Unsigned)

I was lucky enough to be able to see these guys last weekend and fans should be happy to know that their live performance is just as amazing as their songs. From their sound, stage performance and even the incorporation of a guitar made out of a hockey stick their set is one that you won’t forget. Even though they are a relatively new band they are definitely making waves in the scene. When I talked to Skylar Mckee of Super Whatevr he told me how the instant he heard them he knew he had to get them on their tour.

Artist: The Candescents

Song: “Back of Your Hand”

Album: Riverside Dr.

Hometown: Columbus, OH

Release Date: September 21, 2018

Record Label: Dirty Hit

Originally formed in 2014 as a college band, the Candescents were able to escape the house party scene when they signed to Dirty Hit records in 2017. Their EP Riverside Dr. would be release throughout summer 2018 and was fully released in September. The once college band will be on tour with Pale Waves starting in late October.

Artist: Swimming Tapes

Song: “Easy Strand”

Album: (Single)

Hometown: London

Release Date: September 17, 2018

Record Label: Blah Blah Blah Science

With a sound that has been likened to artists such as Real Estate and Day Wave Swimming Tapes has a sound that should be on everyone’s radar. They have made waves on other publications such as BBC radio, KEXP, and KCRW. This new song from Swimming tapes is a great addition to their resume and it makes me excited to see what other releases they have coming in the future.

Artist: CommonWealth

Song: "Fear"

Album: (Single)

Hometown: Orange County, CA

Release Date: August, 17 2018

Record Label: SharpTone

Describing themselves as “honest music for the worn out soul” CommonWealth brings the spiritual rejuvenation that so many people are looking for. Their post-rock style with touches of alternative is something that people in the punk scene would find very appealing. The success of CommonWealth can be attributed to their hard work ethic and just deep down passion. This can definitely be heard in their songs, with their great mixes and passionate lyrics. If you are a fan of Movements or Hotel Books then look no further to find your next favorite band.

Artist: Another Michael

Song: “Go There”

Album: Land

Hometown: Albany, NY

Release Date: August 3, 2018

Another Michael, a local Albany “worry pop” band, released their second EP this summer and I immediately fell in love with their sound. Although I considered this one of my favorite releases of this summer, it is definitely an EP I will be loving all throughout fall, especially on rainy days. There’s just something about this genre that makes me want to sit down with a book, a cup of tea and listen to the rain in the background. Their last EP, released in 2016, was mainly acoustic with a little bit of electronic sound scattered throughout the tracks and sounded a bit like something you’d hear in a local coffee shop, however, Land features many more upbeat rhythms and electronic elements, and even some piano, that really show their growth as a band.

Artist: You Know The Drill

Song: “Blossom”

Album: Blossom, Single

Hometown: Midlands, UK

Release Date: July 9, 2018

You Know The Drill is an emerging pop-punk band from the Midlands, UK. The vocalist, Benji Yapp, draws the listener in immediately with his beautiful voice. They released their single “Blossom” on July 9 which is one of their only acoustic songs. From the acoustic melodies to vocals that are sure to carry you up to the clouds, this is a song that you don’t want to miss. Although it is different from their usual upbeat pop punk jams, it’s one that will warm your heart and make you tear up at the same time.

Artist: Freak Dream

Song: “Do U Now”

Album: Into The Sun

Hometown:

Release Date: September 21, 2018

Record Label: Artofact Records

Into the Sun is the summer release you do NOT want to miss. Freak Dream’s debut album, released on the second to last day of summer, just HAD to be on this list. When I heard this album I was instantly in awe at what I was listening to. I have never heard an artist put together so many different, unique sounds in a better way than Freak Dream does. Not only do they have one of the most individualistic sounds I’ve ever heard, but I don’t even think I could put them into a genre because their music is literally a bunch of very different sounds put together geniusly. If you’re a lover of unique music, stylistic music like I am, then this album was designed for you.

Artist: Chin Up, Kid

Song: “Wasted”

Album: Chin Up, Kid

Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana

Release Date: June 22, 2018

Record Label: Standby Records

Chin Up, Kid is a band that I have been following since the release of their last album, Swing With Your Eyes Closed, an album that I personally love. I was so excited when they released their self-titled album this summer, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. This latest release truly shows how much Chin Up, Kid has grown in just one year. Swing With Your Eyes Closed was a great album, but their self-titled album really shows their true sound. This album definitely made it into my top five album releases of the summer alongside bands like Real Friends, State Champs, and Foxing. After seeing the growth and development of this band over the last year, I think Chin Up, Kid is definitely going to be a band that are going to take the scene by storm in the next few years and gain a reputation as one of the most hard-working bands.

Artist: Mixtape For The Drive/Mixtape

Song: “Show Me What You Got”

Album: Show Me What You Got, Single

Hometown: Wollongong, Australia

Release Date: September 1, 2018

This Australian band made their way into my heart with their single “Show Me What You Got”. Their poignant guitar riffs combined with their catchy lyrics make for the perfect pop-punk track. This is one of their first releases since their album in 2014 and after a long time touring around the world with artists like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Hawthorne Heights, and Unwritten Law, it is clear they have grown a ton as artists in this last single, not to mention they are a DIY band, doing everything themselves from tours to recording which really made them stand out to me. I love when I hear of bands that are 100% self managed, but still sound and promote themselves like bands that are signed to major record labels. I can’t wait to see where they decide to take things in the future.
