Show Review: Welles
Bands: Welles, Marquee Grand, Johnny and the Man Kids.
Venue: Mohawk Place
Last Friday, we had the pleasure of attending the Welles tour stop in Buffalo, NY, the one and only Mohawk Place. The Ozark, Arkansas native had some support from some of our choice local acts, Johnny and the Man Kids, and Marquee Grand. Welles has been making noise in the music scene ever since his debut full-length album Red Trees and White Trashes dropped back in June of 2018. The raspy, yet soothing voice accompanied by a driving, fuzzy rock sound is what makes Welles unique in the best way. While this can all be heard on his is record Red Tress and White Trashes, Welles must be experienced live to understand his powerful and captivating sound.
Starting off the evening was one of our favorite local acts, Johnny and the Man Kids. Their catchy and upbeat pop-rock sound instantly drew a captivated crowd. As many members of the crowd soon realized, once you get a look at ring leader Johnny Marciniak dancing uncontrollably from one side of the stage to the other, it is hard to not join along.
Their set was a combination of their know classics off their debut album, We Are Johnny & the Man Kids, and some unreleased material off their new EP set to drop within the next few months. Not even a broken guitar strap could stop Johnny & the Man Kids from tearing up the Mohawk Place stage. This is definitely a band you do not want to sleep on so keep an eye out for their upcoming release.
Up next with their more classic guitar-driven 90’s rock sound was Marquee Grand from Buffalo, NY. This was my first time catching Marquee Grand, but I was instantly hooked from their first song.
They played a set consisting of a mixture of originals and covers with a dash of soon to be released material. The new song that they teased titled, “Just Like You” is set to be released on February 26, so mark your calendars. Marquee Grand has been making noise all over recently, even being featured on Alternative Buffalo 107.7 localized hour a few months ago. I am super excited to have discovered Marquee Grand and I am excited to see the new music they have in store for us on February 26th.
Finally, the main event of the evening Welles, who was nice enough to make a stop here in Buffalo on this current cross country tour. Riding on his most recent record, “Red Trees and White Trashes” that has received considerable praise since its release back in June of 2018, Jesse Welles is pushing his musical career to the next level. This unbelievably full sounding record cannot be made by just anyone, it takes someone as special as Jesse Welles who truly personifies the rock vibe heard in their music.
While their amps were the smallest of any band that evening, their sound projected and filled the Buffalo venue to its max. However, not to a level that was painful to listen to, it was at the perfect point where you can hear it in your ears and feel it in your heart. It is nearly impossible to not let Welles sound overtake your body, causing you bang your head along to every song. If their sound already has you hooked then his dry, yet still chuckle-worthy humor will only add to your love for Welles. If you aren't lucky like the Buffalo fans to get a tour stop in your city, then I definitely recommend checking out Welles 3D Headphone Remixes, they are a really unique way to experience the magic that is Welles. Personally, I categorize Welles in the same category of reminiscent bands like Greta Van Fleet that have recently been taking the world by storm. I feel lucky to have been able to catch Welles in an intimate setting, and I am excited to see how he can push himself further on his next record that is already in the making. Make sure to check if Welles is making a stop in your city and until next time, get off the charts and support local music.
